At the beginning of January, some clients of Koumbit were victims of attacks aiming to silence them by making their website inaccessible, leading to some network performance issues. First, we want to highlight that this type of attack does not involve any data leak. Second, as Koumbit workers, we want to explain how these attacks could affect you, and what are our solutions to deal with them.
These problems arise due to targeted attacks against clients, which includes community organisations and non-profits. In our case, we do not always know precisely the source of these attacks, but several elements suggest that we can identify the recent attackers and their political motivations. We have recently received explicit, detailed threats from far-right groups. This strategy is used by groups with important financial resources in order to silence groups with lesser financial means.
To better understand these kinds of attacks, here are a few reference links:
- What are the impacts of a DDoS attack?
- What is a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS)?
- How can I help?
In the end, in the context of these attacks, we believe it is necessary to call upon your solidarity and support. The internet remains a battlefield where freedom of speech is quite fragile. Strong and autonomous networks continue to be a major counterweight to the big companies who wish to control the internet, our data, and our lives. We thank you for your solidarity in these challenging times. We shall continue the fight.
